My Story

Burera District

Located in the Northern Provence, along the border of Rwanda and neighboring Uganda, the Burera District is more mountainous than the rest of the country.  Even though it is close to the equator, the 6600 ft elevation keeps the temperatures around 60-70°F by day and they dip down into the 50’s at night.  Nestled near the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo in the Virunga Mountains and near the base of Muhabura Mountain, Burera is filled with beautiful scenery and lots of hotels and tourism. 

Daily life in Burera is slower than in the capital city of Kigali, even with a population of almost 400,000 people.  Most families are substance farmers, which means that they grow just enough food for their family and sell anything that’s extra.  Common foods include grilled fish, lamb, chicken, beef, French fries, sweet potatoes, avocados, rice, flat bread, and lots of tropical fruits like bananas, plantains, passion fruit, and pineapple.
