My Story

Nyaraguru District

Located in the Southern Province, the Nyaraguru District borders the country of Burundi and the Rwandan Nyungwe Forest National Park, one of the best preserved mountain rainforest in Central Africa.  Nyaraguru is also one of the most impoverished districts in the country, with more than 61% of its population being considered either poor or very poor by the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda.  This is where we fund a Nutrition Program for our kids through the local church, because most of them are too malnourished to attend school without eating regular meals for 3 months first.

Daily life in Nyaraguru is slower than in the capital city of Kigali, even with a population of almost 304,000 people.  Most families are substance farmers, which means that they grow just enough food for their family and sell anything that’s extra.  Common foods include grilled fish, lamb, chicken, beef, French fries, sweet potatoes, avocados, rice, flat bread, and lots of tropical fruits like bananas, plantains, passion fruit, and pineapple.
